Burst pipe repair in Potomac Hills, Potomac, MD

Not every burst pipe is a pipe inside a wall. Washing machine hoses, toilet supplies and water heater connections cause plenty of floods. Call (301) 746-0647.

When people say “burst pipe,” they often mean any sudden flood in the house. In practice, many of those floods come from small flexible connections that were never meant to last decades. We’re a referral service and don’t have a local office. We connect you with an independent plumber, and they’ll confirm whether they can come to your address.

The usual suspects

  • Washing machine hoses. Rubber hoses are under constant pressure and can bulge and split. Many plumbers prefer braided stainless hoses, and suggest replacing them every few years.
  • Toilet and faucet supply lines. Braided connectors can corrode at the fittings and burst or leak without warning.
  • Water heater connections. A failing tank or a loose connector can leak a lot of water. Look for rust at the base or a puddle.
  • Ice maker and dishwasher lines. Small tubing behind appliances, often unseen until the floor is soaked.

The quick fix is a local shut-off

Every fixture and most appliances have their own small valve, called a stop valve or angle stop. Turning it clockwise stops the water to that one fixture without shutting off the house. It’s worth knowing where these are for the washer, toilets, sinks and water heater, and trying them now to see whether they turn, since old ones can seize. If the hose has burst and the local valve doesn’t work, use the main.

When it’s time to look at the bigger picture

Houses of a certain age may have original supply piping as well as old connectors. The pipe replacement question is one we cover on our repiping page. If you’ve had a flood from a hose, replacing all your flexible connectors in one visit is inexpensive insurance. If the leak is inside a wall or ceiling, see wall pipe leak repair.

After the flood

Switch off power to the area if water has reached outlets and you can safely reach the breaker, photograph everything, and call your insurer. Appliance-related water damage is often covered when it’s sudden, but ask. A burst hose on a long weekend, with nobody home, is a much bigger claim than one caught in a minute, and insurers may ask about maintenance.

Questions people ask

How often should washing machine hoses be replaced?
Many manufacturers and plumbers suggest every five years or so, or sooner if you see bulges, cracks or rust at the fittings. Braided stainless steel hoses tend to last longer than plain rubber.
Where’s the stop valve for my toilet?
On the wall or floor behind or beside the toilet, a small oval or round handle on the pipe leading to the tank. Turn it clockwise to close.
